Two Weddings and a Fire

While Rad and I had our marriage ceremony in January, both my brother and sister had decided it was time to get married and planned their weddings for spring and summer respectively.

We made our way home first for my brother Ian and his partner Stephanie’s wedding in May. After a quick catch-up with friends in Vancouver, Radhika’s parents joined us for a trip to my parent’s house on Saltspring Island. Despite my parent’s panicked frenzy to finish their home renovations, our trip was relaxing and memorable. Wedding 1: complete.

We returned to British Columbia on Canada day in anticipation of my sister, Lindsay and her partner, Casey’s wedding. Since our Indian wedding wasn’t a registered wedding, we wanted to have our registered ceremony in BC so we thought we’d try to squeeze it in before Lindsay’s wedding. Instead, it would be the only wedding of this trip. Wedding 2: complete.

Lindsay and Casey’s wedding was to be held at the historic Hat Creek Ranch, just outside of Cache Creek. We went to help set up at the venue the day before the wedding and noticed an abundance of smoke by midday. We knew there were fires in the area but had no idea anything was so close until a forest fire started cresting over a nearby mountain. Soon, we could see the fire approaching the ranch as trees were bursting into flames about 20 ft high. Everyone in the area was soon asked to evacuate.

It was a heartbreaking day as Lindsay and Casey’s wedding had to be postponed until September. Luckily, they made their wedding arrangements with local companies that were kind enough to offer their services at a later date. Community is a wonderful thing!
